Diablo 4: What U4GM Recommends for Shard of Verathiel - Andrew736 - 06-18-2026

If you're chasing the Shard of Verathiel, don't treat it like some random sword that'll casually fall out of a chest. It's one of those D4 items that can change how a build feels in your hands. The Basic Skill damage is the big hook, of course, but the resource cost attached to those skills means you can't just slap it on and call the job done. A smart route is to push Kurast Undercity runs in Nahantu with a Greater Tribute of Armaments. That tribute matters. It pulls your rewards toward weapons and combat gear, so you're not wasting half your night staring at boots, rings, and other clutter you didn't ask for.

Make the Undercity work for you

The trick with Kurast Undercity is staying consistent rather than hoping for one miracle run. Offer the Greater Tribute of Armaments at the Spirit Brazier, clear with purpose, and make sure you finish with at least Attunement Rank 1. That rank is where the run starts to feel worth the time, since Ancestral Legendary and Unique rewards enter the picture. You'll still need luck. Everyone does. But you're stacking the dice in a cleaner way than farming open-world drops. If your build clears quickly, this becomes one of the more comfortable loops, because the dungeon is repeatable and doesn't ask you to wait around for a world timer.

Use gambling and transmutation between boss runs

Don't ignore the quieter systems. The Purveyor of Curiosities is boring until it suddenly isn't. Spend Murmuring Obols on weapon slots whenever you've got a pile saved up, then keep the bad rolls moving through your stash instead of letting them rot there. The Horadric Cube's three-to-one transmutation recipe gives unwanted gear another chance to become something useful. It's not glamorous, and you'll see plenty of junk, but this is the sort of side loop that pays off over a long farming session. Even strange drops that don't fit your character, like odd Unique gloves or duplicate pieces, can still feed the next roll.

Varshan is still the direct target

When you want the most direct shot, go after the Tormented Echo of Varshan in the Malignant Burrow, found in the Root of Malignance. Run it on Torment X if you're aiming for the best Ancestral Unique odds. You'll need Malignant Hearts to summon him, and those don't appear from thin air, so build a small stock before you start burning attempts. Standard Varshan kills, Nightmare Dungeons, World Bosses, and Mercenary Bartering can all help you gather them. The fight itself punishes lazy movement. His area attacks can chew through you fast, so save mobility for danger instead of wasting it just to move a few steps quicker.

A simple farming rhythm

  1. Farm Malignant Hearts before committing to a long Varshan session.
  2. Run Tormented Varshan on the highest difficulty your build can handle cleanly.
  3. Use Greater Tribute of Armaments in Kurast Undercity when you want targeted weapon rewards.
  4. Spend Obols on weapon gambling instead of scattering them across random slots.
  5. Recycle unwanted gear through transmutation so dead drops still have value.

The best approach is to mix these methods instead of living in one activity until you're sick of it. Do a batch of Varshan kills, break it up with Undercity runs, then dump Obols and spare Uniques into more rolls. Players who compare drops, builds, or even check d4 gear for sale listings usually understand one thing quickly: Shard of Verathiel is worth planning around, but it rewards patience more than panic farming.
